Abstract: Purpose: This study focuses on factors influencing the growth and development of Bodaboda businesses in Zanzibar, considering regulatory, operational, safety, and financial aspects. It aims to identify key challenges operators face and explore opportunities for business growth and sustainability. Study Design and Approach: Using qualitative and quantitative research methods, cross-sectional data were collected from 150 bodaboda operators in Zanzibar's selected regions. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire designed based on a 5-Likert scale and face-to-face interviews. Descriptive and correlation analyses were conducted on quantitative data, and thematic analysis was used on interview responses. Findings: The study discovered that more than half of the operators' main complaints were the plant's high operational costs and inadequate government financial support. Other challenges that came up for new members of the organisation included safety issues and competition. Nonetheless, operators agreed that customer satisfaction is crucial to the business and advocated for technology as the means of development. Originality and Value: The study offers important lessons on the struggles that Bodaboda riders in Zanzibar are experiencing and the need to embark on appropriate policy adjustments and improvements to unlock the sector. Thus, it helps explain how the bodaboda sector can develop towards greater returns and sustainability.
