Abstract: INTRODUCTION In the field of medical education, learning environment refers to a wide range of physical, social, and psychological attributes that affect learning.[1] The presence of a supportive learning environment plays a crucial role in improving the engagement of students, motivating students to work in the direction of attainment of learning objectives, retaining complex medical concepts, and improving overall academic performance.[2] In addition, it also plays a vital role in ensuring the mental well-being of the students by reducing the amount of stress and anxiety among them.[3] Furthermore, it prepares students to effectively deal with the emotional and ethical challenges of clinical practice and aids in the acquisition of critical skills (viz., empathy, communication, teamwork, and leadership).[1,2] In short, the learning environment in a medical college is of paramount importance in defining and shaping the future of healthcare professionals.[2] PSYCHOLOGICAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT The psychological aspect of the learning environment deals with the emotional and mental perspective that essentially influences and determines learning experiences among medical students.[4] It is of utmost importance that institutions must prioritize maintaining a balance between the existing workload and set realistic expectations for students to prevent burnout among them.[4] Once medical students are exposed to a positive psychological environment, they feel as if they belong to the place and the course, which in turn brings about a significant reduction in anxiety levels and plays a vital role in motivating them to continue their efforts to work in the direction of attainment of learning objectives.[4,5] At this juncture, we must acknowledge and accept that students should be given autonomy in the form of different learning opportunities to have control over their learning experiences (self-directed learning), as it becomes vital in intrinsic motivation and personal growth.[5,6] The key components of such an environment include a positive emotional climate that gives a platform for students to stay open in expressing their views and feel a sense of safety.[5] In addition, there is an emphasis toward maintaining a healthy relationship among students and between medical students and teachers. All this cannot be accomplished unless there is a strong support system (viz., counseling services, mental health programs, and workshops to manage stress/workload) and a positive institutional culture that advocates respect, diversity, and inclusion regardless of any parameters.[5-7] Mentorship will play a defining role in these activities, and there is an immense need to train and prepare mentors who are competent to provide professional and personal guidance to the students.[4-6] Finally, teachers must be engaged in fair and transparent assessment practices and effectively deliver constructive and timely feedback to students about their performance in assessments and on their professional behaviors.[5-7] IMPACT OF POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGICAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT The presence of a positive psychological learning environment improves the overall academic performance by strengthening the ability of students to concentrate, understand concepts, and retain complex topics.[4] As earlier mentioned, it is crucial to improve the resilience and coping skills of the students to deal with the pressure of medical training and stay positive.[6] This kind of learning environment not only intricately motivates students to engage in learning but also plays a defining role in the acquisition of professional qualities such as empathy, communication skills, and dealing with ethical dilemmas.[6,7] Students with such kind of exposure tend to maintain strong relationships with their peers, and there is also a reduction in the overall dropout rates.[5] There is also a significant improvement in the quality of interaction between teachers and students and the formation of long-term bonding. To summarize, the presence of a positive psychological learning environment brings about the holistic development and well-being of future healthcare professionals.[5-7] IDENTIFIED CHALLENGES AND POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS The creation and sustenance of a positive psychological environment have been associated with multiple challenges that must be overcome for better outcomes [Table 1].[2,7,8] This begins with the academic pressure that medical students have to bear owing to the demanding curriculum and the rigorous assessment methods that make the environment extremely stressful.[8] This also results in creating an imbalance between the personal and professional life and impacts the mental well-being of the students.[7] Considering the kind of stigma that is prevailing in society about mental health issues, more often than not, students do not come forward to seek help and support.[9] From the administration’s perspective, the stakeholders can be reluctant to adopt new policies and practices that can improve the psychological aspect of the learning environment.[4,5,8] As faculty members will be at the forefront in interacting with the students, a lack of training can significantly influence their abilities to discharge their roles in improving the psychological well-being of students.[10]Table 1: Identified challenges and potential solutionsMoreover, the very fact that students come to any medical college from different parts of the nation, it is quite obvious that all of them will have varied cultural backgrounds, and this makes it even more challenging for administrators to devise inclusive policies.[9] In addition, the practice of ragging and harassment of junior students by senior students can impact the psychological environment within the medical college campus.[11] Further, institutions that lack comprehensive support systems can account for a major void due to which students might feel isolated and deprived. Finally, many medical colleges only prioritize academic growth without giving any consideration to psychological well-being, and this becomes a major cause of academic stress and burnout.[8] This calls for an indispensable need to take proactive and concerted measures to overcome these identified challenges and support students in their well-being as depicted in Table 1.[2,4,7,9-11] CONCLUSION The presence of a positive psychological environment in medical institutions is crucial in the making of competent healthcare professionals. However, the need of the hour is to adopt a concerted and collective effort to create and sustain a nurturing psychological learning environment for the benefit of medical students.
