Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The role of literature in education extends beyond the confines of linguistic proficiency, providing students with intellectual, emotional, and moral insights that are indispensable for holistic learning. In Bangladesh, English literature has historically held a significant place within the educational framework, yet its potential as a transformative pedagogical tool remains underexplored. This research paper investigates the integration of English literature into teaching practices in Bangladesh, focusing on its ability to foster critical thinking, cultural awareness, and creativity. It adopts a qualitative approach, relying on primary and secondary data to analyze historical developments, contemporary practices, and challenges in literature teaching. The findings reveal that while literature possesses immense pedagogical potential, its impact is often limited by outdated curricula, inadequate teacher training, and a predominantly exam-oriented education system. This paper concludes with recommendations for curriculum reform, enhanced teacher training, and innovative teaching methods to strengthen the role of literature in fostering globally aware, culturally rooted learners.
