Abstract: This research first evaluates the path of the grid form in the historical process through civilizations, religions and periods, and then examines today's postmodern period through exemplary works of contemporary artists. The historical history of the grid form includes the Neolithic period, Chalcolithic period, Bronze period, Egyptian civilization, Mesopotamian cultures (Sumerian, Babylonian, Akkadian, Assyrian), Anatolian cultures (Hittite, Greek, Roman, Antiquity, Byzantine), Judaism, Christianity, Islamic religions, Traces of Far Eastern civilizations, American civilizations, the Renaissance period and the Modern period can be traced.During this follow-up, it is seen that the grid form sometimes remains in the technical and material dimension, becoming a tool value, sometimes remaining in the expression and content dimension, and sometimes taking on the characteristics of purpose and tool value. On the other hand, it is understood that the purpose and value properties of the grid form occur around concepts such as picture, writing, symbol, image, arithmetic, 'beautiful', useful, balance, harmony, object of representation, work, cosmos, form, content, geometry, architecture and structurality. Then, contemporary artists who use the grid form in different geographies of the world in the postmodern period are identified and a sample work of five people among them is examined. These contemporary artists include Belgian-Danish Eric Andersen (1940), American James Turrel (1943), Palestinian-British Mona Hatoum (1952), American Peter Halley (1953) and British Sarah Morris (1967).The appearance of the grid form on the works of contemporary artists of the postmodern period is mostly shaped around concepts and themes such as globalization, technology, capitalism, consumerism, separation from reality and artificiality, and the evil of wars, while the goal moves in a value direction. This research, which examines the historical story of the grid form and the grid form in contemporary art through sample works, is a case study using the descriptive research method and thematic analysis. As a result, while it is understood that the grid form is closely related to concepts such as aesthetics, beauty, harmony, usefulness and structurality in its historical story until the end of the modern period, it is understood that the grid form in contemporary art is shaped around concepts and themes such as globalization, criticism, questioning and deconstruction in today's world. It is hoped that this research, which approaches the grid form from both historical and contemporary artists, will contribute to the world of art literature in the context of social sciences.
