Metallic Staple Migration Postcholecystectomy Causing Cholangitis

Study design: Case Report
Abstract: We present a case of a middle-aged man who presented owing to concern for right upper quadrant abdominal pain. He was found to have mild cholangitis with transaminitis secondary to a partial obstruction from a metallic staple, which was initially placed during cholecystectomy 1.5 years before presentation. This case shows that staples placed intraoperatively during cholecystectomy rarely can migrate intraluminally in the common bile duct and cause partial obstructions that could lead to cholangitis. Fewer than 100 cases of clip migration have been reported postcholecystectomy.
