Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: The relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes has become a pressing concern in the digital age. This study employs a secondary data analysis approach to explore the complex dynamics between online engagement and psychological well-being. A systematic review of ten selected research studies, published within the last decade, was conducted to synthesize findings on the relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes. The analysis involved a qualitative methodology, specifically a systematic review methodology, to provide a comprehensive assessment of existing literature. The findings of this study highlight the complex and multifaceted nature of the relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes. The analysis reveals that social media use can have both positive and negative effects on mental health, depending on the type of use, frequency, and content. The study also identifies key themes, trends, and gaps in understanding the complex dynamics between online engagement and psychological well-being. The results of this study have important implications for mental health professionals, policymakers, and social media companies. The findings suggest that social media use can be a valuable tool for promoting mental health and well-being, but also highlight the need for responsible social media use and the importance of addressing the potential negative effects of social media on mental health.
