The problem of Zanabazar’s heritage as the basis of the Mongolian style
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: According to the bibliographies of contemporary Western and Eastern art studies, Zanabazar’s artwork is categorized as “a school of the Sino-Tibetan style”. A comparative analysis of the style has not been conducted, even though Mongolian and some foreign experts have defined the Mongolian iconography art tradition as a Mongolian school of Buddhist art originating from G. Zanabazar. Nyam-Osoryn Tsultem, Evelina Ganevskaya, and Surun-Khanda Syrtypova were selected for the study; their evaluations and conclusions regarding the aesthetics of Undur Gegen’s artwork were examined, contrasted, and reflected in the structuralist model of the style. This is vital for the logical assessment of the Buddhist art of Mongolia and the style of Undur Gegen Zanabazar. The paper also suggests that the “Mongol style” issue may be identified by examining ancient sources.
