Abstract: Objective: The goal of this study was to develop a quantitative evaluation method for assessing tooth gloss recovery following daily acidic challenges, and to formulate a superior whitening toothpaste that offers both effective stain removal and significant gloss enhancement. Methods: Six commercially available toothpastes were selected for evaluation, and bovine enamel specimens were exposed to an acidic coke to simulate erosive damage. These specimens were then treated with toothpaste slurries using a brushing machine.Tooth gloss was measured before and after brushing using a gloss meter.Additionally, we assessed the stain removal efficacy of the commercial toothpastes and the stain prevention efficacy of potential whitening agents.Following the incorporation of the newly identified whitening agent into the toothpaste, we evaluated the gloss enhancement effects preand post-brushing.Results: Phytic acid exhibits stain prevention effects comparable to those of SHMP.Toothpastes with SHMP show a 1.5-fold or greater improvement in gloss and a gloss unit increase (ΔGU) of 7.3 or higher compared to regular toothpaste after 10 minutes of brushing. Moreover, toothpastes containing both SHMP and 0.3% phytic acid demonstrate a remarkable 2.2-fold enhancement in gloss and a substantial increase of 17.3 gloss units compared to regular toothpaste after 10 minutes of brushing. Conclusion: Toothpastes containing both SHMP and phytic acid provided significant improvements in tooth gloss. This newly developed whitening toothpaste is expected to meet the high expectations of consumers seeking enhanced whitening effects.
