Abstract: Introduction: The routine surgical procurement of human organs for transplant has traditionally taken place within an acute care hospital where the patient is declared dead. In 2001, the St. Louis, Missouri organ procurement organization (OPO) opened the first independent donor care unit (DCU), with 29 of 56 OPOs now supporting DCUs.
