Anatomy: Then and Now
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The teaching of anatomy has changed significantly from the early 1990s to now. Conventional teaching consisted of cadaver dissection and attempting to understand the basic concepts with the help of the standard textbooks and the accompanying illustrations, which was time-consuming but highly rewarding. With the advent of digitalization, computer-based techniques, including artificial intelligence (AI), are being increasingly used for teaching anatomy. Has this helped the students? Is information overload an emerging problem? The traditional methods of cadaveric dissection continue to be a better way to understand the concepts of neuroanatomy. Further, a judicious mix of computer-assisted and AI-based teaching and learning methods on the one hand, and conventional methods on the other, may be the way forward.
