Abstract: From 1560 onward in Strasbourg, after the re-establishment of Lutheranism in the city's remaining Catholic parishes, it became possible to create a prosopography of the population using wedding and baptism registers. Following in the footsteps of Jean-Pierre Kintz and Colin Arnaud, this article analyzes twenty years of baptism records from Strasbourg's intermediate/peripheral parish of Saint-Pierre-le-Vieux, which accounts for 15% of all baptisms performed in the city. The comparison between parish registers, as well as the registers of the new burghers, makes it possible to determine the profile of the generation of the fathers through the criteria of their profession and access to citizenship. A comparison of nearly 1,200 fathers and 1,800 godfathers reveals phenomena of geographical (in another parish) or professional (in another trade) "exo-godparenthood," also linked to factors such as age, integration into the bourgeoisie, and the exercise of political functions in the urban republic. The phenomena of inter-parish mobility and the generational, geographical, professional, and political differences between fathers and godfathers are used to refine this concept of "exo-godparenthood." The transmission of familial and religious names, as well as the impact of godfathers in the naming practices of male children in this now fully Protestant urban republic, are explored in the final section of the article.
