Health Care Educators Perception of Students Regarding Guidance And Counseling At Higher Educational Institutions-A Pilot Study
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This pilot study investigated healthcare educators' perceptions of guidance and counselling services in higher education institutions. Healthcare educators generally agree that students exhibit engagement in classroom activities; however, they identify a lack of specific skills and attitudes critical for academic success. Approximately 50 percent of healthcare educators with at least ten years of experience in higher education reported a decline in these competencies. The emerging themes from healthcare educators’ feedback suggest that students' skills and work ethics have diminished while their sense of entitlement, particularly regarding academic grades, has increased. Furthermore, healthcare educators attributed this decline to insufficient preparation for fundamental skills from secondary education, the prevailing culture and politics within secondary schooling, students' unrealistic expectations of higher education, and their active lifestyles outside the classroom.
