Hypertension Is Too Important for Healthcare Professionals Alone to Try and Solve

Abstract: High blood pressure (BP) is the leading risk factor for global morbidity and mortality.1,2 Despite decades of intense public health efforts and the widescale availability of inexpensive medications, only about 1 in 5 adults with hypertension worldwide has their BP controlled (<140/90 mm Hg). Nearly half remain unaware of their condition. The health statistics are better in the United States; however, only marginally so when a BP goal of <130/80 mm Hg is considered (e.g., 25% control rate).3 Particularly, disconcerting is that 36% of adults with hypertension in the US remain unaware of their high BP. While this failure impacts the population relatively equally (e.g., race, sex), it is especially problematic among younger adults. Moreover, for a number of reasons (e.g., costs), a rising percentage of people (30%-38%) report deliberately avoiding contact with the medical system (30%-38%)4 and, as such, the true prevalence of undiagnosed hypertension in the US may be even worse.
