Type: article
Abstract: Funk carioca is the first genre of Brazilian electronic dance music (Palombini, 2009, p.15) and is continuously produced at “bailes funk”, Sound System events organized by and for the population of marginalized areas, held in Rio de Janeiro since the 1970s. The 'montages' are tracks produced by DJs from the funk party circuit since the 1990s, characterized by their 'fragmented' sound and composition using funk samples. The aim of this work is to highlight 'crew montages', a type of composition that has been marginalized in the historiography of funk, and to demonstrate part of its relevance in the fundamental processes of the genre. The observations presented here are based on a multi-sited ethnography conducted within the “baile funk” circuit of Rio de Janeiro since 2018, as well as two key interviews conducted with funk artists who produced 'crew montages'.
