Detection of β-lactamases enzymes and their encoding genes in some enteric bacteria isolated from meat and clinical sources

Type: article
Abstract: Aims: The study investigates the prevalence and distribution of β-lactamases and their encoding genes in enteric bacteria isolated from meat versus clinical sources. It also determines the antibiotic sensitivity of the enteric isolates of contaminated meat.Methodology and results: Citrobacter koseri, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp.and Proteus mirabilis previously isolated and diagnosed were among the enteric bacteria studied. The results showed that all isolates were multi-drug resistant (MDR), with rates ranging from (58.3-67%) of each isolate to all studied antibiotics. In addition, clinical and meat isolates have been absolute resistance (100%) against ampicillin, penicillin, vancomycin, trimethoprim and tetracycline, and their resistance were graded in lower percentages than the rest of the studied antibiotics. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: The results demonstrated that all isolates could produce βlactamases.β-lactamases genes (blaSHV, blaTEM and blaCTX-M) were detected in isolates from both sources. The blaTEM were found in all clinical isolates (100%) and half of the meat isolates (50%), whereas blaSHV and blaCTX-M were found at similar rates, 75% and 50%, respectively, in both sources.
