National Democratic Front in northern Yemen (1976-1990)

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Since the events that began on September 26, 1962, the Yemeni scene has witnessed the emergence of numerous political movements and currents, some with historical roots in Yemen, while others were founded by political figures with deep revolutionary backgrounds. Historically, the Yemeni political scene shows that the revolution of September 26, 1962, divided Yemeni society into two factions: monarchists and republicans. This division created differences in culture and orientations among leaders and the general population, leading to the formation of various political movements and coalitions, including the National Democratic Front. The National Democratic Front faced many difficulties in its early stages and did not emerge directly but went through several phases imposed by the political situation in northern Yemen, especially after the declaration of the Yemen Arab Republic. This republic was burdened with numerous problems, which influenced the political orientation of the Front.
