Is two better than one? Parental involvement in schoolchildren with one and two parents and their academic performance

Year: 2024
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study investigated whether schoolchildren having two parents outperform those with one parent in terms of academic performance. Specifically, it investigated parental involvement in the education of the fifth and sixth grade schoolchildren of an elementary school, and how parental involvement affected their academic performance. Seventy-two schoolchildren answered the Parental Involvement Scale (PIS), a survey questionnaire that was modified into two categories: (a) PIS-Mother and (b) PIS-Father. Findings revealed that regardless of whether the schoolchildren have two parents or one, it does not affect their academic performance. Parental involvement has a negative correlation with the academic performance of elementary schoolchildren.
