Abstract: China's rise as a leader in scientific research has significantly influenced global educational dynamics. For Kazakh students, pursuing an education in China is an opportunity to access high-quality learning. Existing research shows that 88.8% of these students believe that having a Chinese diploma or certificate assures them a brighter future (Goshanova and Rakisheva, 2016). Since 2008, Kazakhstan has been among the top ten countries sending students to China, joining the ranks of South Korea, Thailand, India, the USA, Japan, Russia, Indonesia, and Laos. However, this raises the question: How do Kazakh students view the opportunities and challenges presented by Chinese education? To what extent has China's educational cooperation with Kazakhstan fostered positive perceptions among Kazakh students? This paper contributes to the existing literature on China's education diplomacy by offering additional empirical evidence concerning the motivations behind choosing to study in China and the primary challenges faced by students. It sheds light on the mismatch between the job market demand in the Kazakhstani economy and the type of education provided by Chinese universities. The authors investigate Kazakhstani students’ perceived opportunities and challenges and assesses the efficacy of Sino-Kazakh educational cooperation in engendering favorable perceptions. Surveys and interviews conducted at four universities in Kazakhstan show that while Chinese education presents numerous opportunities, challenges in language acquisition have impeded achieving the best academic outcomes and undermined China's education diplomacy efforts to cultivate favoritism. This research provides nuanced insight into the broader geopolitical implications of China's growing influence in Central Asia.
