Insights to the Transition Regimes of Flow-Induced Vibration for Three Tandem Cylinders

Type: article
Abstract: Flow-induced vibration (FIV) is a complex phenomenon governed by the coupling effects of flow dynamics and structure vibrations. It is conventionally regarded as a threat to the structures, while recently it can also be a high-efficient energy harvesting approach. The vibration of a single cylinder has been well-understood by vortex-induced vibration (VIV) theory, but the FIV mechanism of tandem cylinders has not been revealed systematically. In this work, the vibration coherence is defined to analyze the regimes of FIV among the tandem cylinders, cooperating with the vibration responses, flow patterns and phase lags. For three tandem cylinders with the span ratio ranging from L/D=1.3 to L/D =4.0, where L is the center-to-center distance and D is the diameter, three vibration regimes are identified. Specifically, separated VIV and wake-induced galloping (WIG) occurs at L/D=1.3, and a continuous VIV-WIG appears at L/D =1.5. The coherence is obvious at the vortex shedding frequency (fv and 2fv) for L/D≥2. It verifies that the FIV of tandem cylinder at L/D≥2 is controlled by the co-shedding gap vortices and wake vortices. The established regimes contribute to understanding the FIV of tandem cylinders, so as to design the industrial structures and energy harvesting devices efficiently.
