Characteristics of Recycled Asphalt Mixtures Utilizing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) Materials
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) material is produced through the cold milling of old pavement surface layers. Given the significant amount of RAP available, recycling is essential to support environmental sustainability. This study focuses on utilizing RAP as a recycled material for the AC-BC layer and evaluating the Marshall characteristics of the asphalt mixture for the intermediate layer (AC-BC). This research utilized a material composition of 30% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) combined with 70% fresh aggregate. The RAP material was sourced from the Bangkinang-Petapahan cross road section, and the mixture gradation met the standards set by the 2018 Bina Marga Technical Specifications, Revision 2. Each mixture variation was evaluated using the Marshall Test to determine its characteristics. The results showed that the Marshall characteristics of the AC-BC mixture, consisting of 70% new aggregate mixed with 30% RAP, met the required standards. The test results indicated a VIM value of 4.3%, asphalt stability of 2,088 kg, VFB of 86%, VMA of 14.50%, flow of 3.8 mm, and an MQ of 535 kg/mm
