Abstract: The study of the specifics of modern democratic governance in the current context is of great importance for a number of reasons. The necessity for updated approaches to governance arises from the need to adapt to contemporary challenges such as digitalisation, globalisation, climate change, migration and political manipulation. It is imperative that the sustainability of democratic institutions is safeguarded from authoritarian tendencies. This necessitates a comprehensive grasp of the intricacies of modern democratic systems. This article examines the intricate and contradictory nature of democratic governance through the lens of its evolution and the contemporary context. The author begins with a famous quote by Winston Churchill and proceeds to analyse the evolution of democratic governance concepts from classical views to modern theories. Particular attention is paid to the role of pluralism, citizen participation, human rights protection and the importance of civil society. The proposed methodology extends the classical approaches by adding new aspects, such as digitalisation and globalisation, which allows for a better understanding of democratisation processes in the modern context.
