El FabLab en la Escola Joan XXIII

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: The FabLab (FABrication LABoratory) was born at MIT in Massachusetts with the course “How to build almost anything”. A FabLab is a place equipped with computer-controlled machine tools (3D printing, laser cutting, NC-Numerical Control, vinyl cutting, electronic prototyping...) that covers all aspects of the technological development process: design, manufacturing, verification, monitoring, analysis and documentation. The cornerstone for the development and consolidation of the FabLab is to constitute a learning community that provides the necessary skills to use the production infrastructure. The FabLab is therefore an ideal gateway to STEAM education, encouraging access to Digital Fabrication. The project presented here adopts and adapts the FabLab in school to enhance inclusive learning, creative problem/challenge solving and collaborative work, connecting people with Digital Fabrication. This article presents the implementation process at the Escola Joan XXIII in Bonavista-Tarragona without any prior experience with the FabLab. The objectives of the project are the training of teachers, the creation of the FabLab, and the co-design of educational resources so that students have new and better learning-teaching environments.
