The Semantic Classification and Request of Mood Verbs in Middle Armenian

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: In Armenian linguistics, no attempt has been made to analyze the semantic classification of the verb vocabulary. Therefore, the formation of the semantic group of mental state verbs, the identification of the linking possibilities manifested by the extraction of semantic features will provide an opportunity to classify the verb vocabulary according to certain semantic groups, contributing to the regulation of the semantic groupings operating in that field and the identification of systematic mutual connections. Thus, the topicality of the research is due to the need for a systematic research of the semantics of the verb lexicon. In this article, we aim to present the semantic boundaries of one of the polynomial groups in the verb lexicon, the mental state verbs, their connectivity in Middle Armenian, based on the semantic criteria of classification and the linguistic material provided by the Middle Armenian originals. It becomes obvious from the examination that the common thing for the verb units of this semantic group is to express the manifestations of various mental states of a rational being, a person. According to the meaning, the separation of sub-patterns of mental state verbs is significantly complicated due to the diversity of their semantic fields in Middle Armenian, but unlike the other two regions of the development of literary Armenian, mental state verbs in Middle Armenian are mostly devoid of secondary and metaphorical meanings: the original or primary meaning prevails. The verbs included in this semantic group, in the language situation of Middle Armenian, are mostly of the neutral gender, a few mental verbs are of the passive gender (mainly the verbs of the desire sub-pattern), the request of which is manifested by receiving a subject, and the verbs of the mentioned group of the neutral gender, due to the gender or the nuances they express, require complements with different morphemes, in the formation of which the exception and functional morphemes are mainly active in their semantic aspects. There are relatively few verbs that require a problem with the combination of a conjunction and a connecting word. Complements formed by the exclusive case express the relationship between the cause and the passive action in the base, and those expressed by the active case — the relationship mean the action.
