Biblical Studies and Hermeneutics. Judah, the Remnant, and the Consummation: The People of God in Zephaniah
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article focuses on key elements and developments in the theme of God’s people in the book of Zephaniah. Beginning with Judah at the end of the seventh century, it examines the book’s spiritual and moral characterization of pre-exilic Judeans, the appearance and defining characteristics of the faithful remnant, and the changes the remnant undergoes from its initial appearance prior to the exile to the eschatological consummation that closes the book. Special attention is given to the related themes of repentance, internal renewal, the roles of non-Israelites, and God’s actions and presence. A final section traces these threads forward into the New Testament and considers the unity and diversity of the people of God across redemptive history.
