Abstract: The rapid proliferation of AI-powered data centers has led to significant increases in electricity consumption, with projections suggesting that these facilities could account for up to 9% of the United States' total electricity generation by 2030.This paper explores the factors contributing to the high energy demands of AI data centers, such as model training and online/offline inference.Estimates for the power and energy consumption for AI infrastructure are presented here, along with the analysis of existing energy efficiency techniques deployed in the industry.Additionally, the paper discusses the role of regulatory measures, corporate governance, and public awareness in supporting energy-efficient practices. The paper also highlights the potential of revolutionary technologies like quantum computing.By addressing these challenges, the technology industry can mitigate the environmental and economic impacts of growing energy demands, ensuring sustainable growth and development in the AI domain.
