Exploring the Transition Pathways From Tobacco to Illicit Drug Use: a Mental Health Perspective Among Bangladeshi University Students
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction:The prevalence of tobacco use among Bangladeshi university students is alarmingly high, with approximately 10% of students being current smokers. This initial engagement with tobacco often serves as a gateway to the use of more harmful substances, including illicit drugs.Factors such as peer pressure, stress, and mental health issues like anxiety and depression significantly increase the risk of substance use. Methods: This article is based on a comprehensive review of existing literature and the analysis of online data collected through interviews and surveys with university students and mental health professionals in Bangladesh. The literature review aimed to identify existing research on the prevalence, patterns, and factors influencing the transition from tobacco to illicit drug use.The online data collection provided qualitative insights into the personal experiences and perspectives of students and professionals. Results: The findings indicate that tobacco use is prevalent among university students, with a significant proportion also experimenting with or regularly using illicit drugs.Mental health issues were strongly associated with the transition from tobacco to illicit drug use, with many students using substances as a coping mechanism.Factors such as peer pressure, stress, and the availability of substances were identified as key influences.Discussion: The transition from tobacco to illicit drugs is driven by social, psychological, and environmental factors.Mental health issues both cause and result from substance use, creating a challenging cycle.Effective interventions must address mental health support, stress management, and substance use education.Future research should explore the mechanisms of this transition, specific mental health conditions linked to substance use, and the effectiveness of prevention strategies. Conclusion: Addressing the transition from tobacco to illicit drugs among Bangladeshi university students requires a multifaceted approach.Mental health support, education, and targeted interventions are essential for preventing substance use and promoting well-being.
