Abstract: Medicinal plants are at great interest to the researcher in the field of biotechnology, as most of the drug industries depend in medicinal plants for the production of pharmaceutical compounds. Plants are the traditional sources for many chemicals used as pharmaceutical biochemicals, fragrances, food colours and flavours in different countries especially in India. Cryptolepis buchanani belongs to the Asclepiadaceae family and is well known for its medicinal properties like anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The present study was carried out to evaluate the secondary metabolites of the crude extracts by qualitative and quantitative techniques. The chemical content of the crude extracts from the leaves of Cryptolepis buchanani has also been investigated and characterized using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). GCMS analysis of ethanolic extract was done by standard protocol using the equipment Agilent GCMS 7890 is a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of 25 phytochemical compounds like Squalene, Pentatryacontene, Phytol, 3-tryfluroacetoxytetradecane and Hexadeconoic acid ethyl ester etc in the ethanolic extract of Cryptolepis buchanani. Hence, the Cryptolepis buchanani may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and hepatoprotective activities due to the presence of secondary metabolites in the ethanolic extract. Due to the presence of esters which can be used as a flavoring agent in food industries. These findings support the traditional use of Cryptolepis buchanani in various disorders. Further studies are needed to isolate active principle of the extract as well as to elucidate their exact mechanism of action in various disorders.
