Abstract: This article promotes a comparative reading of two of the greatest works of fiction produced in Portugal in the 20th century: Húmus (1917), by Raul Brandão, and Livro do desassossego (1982), by Fernando Pessoa (Bernardo Soares). Such an analytical confrontation is motivated by the understanding that in both works the figure of the dream occupies a central place. The objective of this article is to read both works from the theme of the dream, establishing similarities and differences, thus contributing to the understanding of the texts. At first, an attempt is made to define the dream in each of the works. Then, in a second part, the rapprochement between them is established through four themes: 1 – the dream and the encounter with oneself; 2 – overcoming the reality/dream opposition by substituting the first term for the second; 3 – the dream as an operator of metamorphoses; 4 – the dream as a reaction to the world.
