A Rare Retroperitoneal Tumor in a Patient with a Solitary Kidney

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Retroperitoneal hemangioma is a rare tumor and constitutes <5% of all retroperitoneal tumors. It is considered a congenital abnormality and is usually seen in infants and young adults. Primary retroperitoneal cavernous hemangioma (PRCH) is further rarer, as it develops de novo , remains separate from the surrounding organs, and has no vessel connection. Till now, only four cases of PRCH have been reported in world literature. The patient is usually asymptomatic or may present with vague abdominal symptoms when increases in size and usually due to local compression of surrounding organs. Radiological images are not specific; hence diagnosis is difficult before surgery. Surgical excision and tissue biopsy remain the mainstay of treatment and confirmation of diagnosis. We, hereby, report a case of large RPCH, incidentally detected in elderly women with solitary functioning kidney, during a routine screening examination, managed with complete surgical excision, and diagnosis confirmed on histopathological examination.
