Abstract: Water quality is fundamental to human health, environmental balance and development. It must meet purity standards to ensure its safe use in consumption, agriculture, industry and leisure. Water must be free of contaminants to prevent disease and protect ecosystems and biodiversity. Strict water quality management and surveillance are essential to avoid environmental crises and public health problems. The study analyzed water quality in the Grussaí/Iquipari lagoon complex, in the artificial lake of Balneário de Atafona and at the old mouth of the Paraíba do Sul River in Atafona. Samples were collected monthly and parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, total coliforms, E. coli were analyzed. , phosphate, nitrite, nitrate, ammonium and total nitrogen. The results were evaluated at LABFOZ at the Campos dos Goytacazes Innovation Center. The results showed that the Grussaí Lagoon has a significant presence of total coliforms and E. coli, indicating pollution problems and a lack of environmental preservation. In contrast, Iquipari Lagoon had the best quality, with some analyzes showing the absence of these contaminants; the results obtained were compared with CONAMA resolution N°357/2005.
