Would it be worth recycling Polylactide (PLA). Technological, environmental and socio-economical points of view
Year: 2022
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Despite the legitimate interest they generate, biobased polymers, such as Polylactide (PLA) are still underdeveloped and are limited to so-called "niche" application areas without necessarily changing the traditional production and recycling channels for plastics. At a time when the circular economy is required, the lack of a recycling channel could severely hinder the development of PLA, one of the most developed bio-sourced polymers. Considering technological, environmental and socio-economical points of view, a key question seems to be : “would it be worth recycling PLA” ? Basing on first results aiming at “simulating” a mechanical recycling of PLA and its potential environmental benefits, we will discuss on identified barriers to PLA mechanical recycling, which seem to be mostly in the socio-economic field.
