Abstract: Based on Scalise and Bisetto's (2009) three-way classification of compounds-coordinate, attribute, and subordinate-Asada et al. (2022) reported that the three types of compounds in Japanese Sign Language (JSL) display variations in the number of repetitive hand movements in their compound forms compared with the dictionary forms of the constituent words that form the compound. In this paper, we argue that repetitive movements are instances of reduplication and propose a constraint-based analysis of the phonological realizations of the three types of compounds in JSL.Under this analysis, the observed patterns of repetitions, which thus far have remained unclear, naturally follow from the ranking of constraints that we propose. One important implication of our proposal is that it offers the first evidence from the sign language modality in support of Ito and Mester's (2009, et seq.) theory concerning the recursion of prosodic categories.
