Abstract: The paper aims to investigate Helen’s apparition in Goethe’s Faust II, through Walter Benjamin’s Goethes Wahlverwandtschafen, essay written between 1921 and 1923, in which Benjamin reads Goethe’s novel Die Wahlverwandtschafen. In his essay, Benjamin focuses on Ottilie, whose beauty, in Goethe’s novel, represents an innovation in front of epic and mythological narration. Comparing Ottilie “apparent beauty” to that of Helen in Faust, an incredible closeness between Goethe and Euripides is revealed, insofar as apparent beauty is a sort of mythological fundamental of all wars.
