Analysis of Student Error Solving Exponential Number Problems Based on Newman at MTs Manggarupi
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This study aims to analyze students' errors in solving mathematical problems on exponential numbers. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The participants were 18 ninth-grade students of MTs Manggarupi in the odd semester of the 2023/2024 academic year who had studied the material on exponential numbers. The research instrument in this study used a diagnostic test of the minimum ability assessment type of story questions on the subject of exponential numbers, which were analyzed using Newman's error analysis. The results of the study showed that (1) 21.4% of students made errors in reading questions the cause of students were unable to read essential words and symbols in the questions, (2) 50% of students made errors in understanding questions due to students being unable to work on questions because students were not used to working on story problems and students' misunderstanding of the questions given, (3) 78.5% of questions were errors in transforming questions due to students being unable to interpret questions into the correct mathematical model, (4) 42.8% of process skill errors due to students being careless when working on questions, and (5) 57.1% of answers were errors in writing answers due to students being wrong in determining the correct final answer and not being right in writing conclusions and units of the final results obtained.
