Evaluation of the technical feasibility of replacing natural limestone aggregate by iron ore tailing in the production of adhesive mortar
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: In this study, the replacement of natural limestone (NLA), widely used in the manufacture of adhesive mortars, by iron ore tailings (IOT), an abundant and underutilized material with great potential for application in cement products, was analyzed. The detailed characterization of IOT and NLA was performed through physical, morphological, mineralogical and chemical tests, ensuring the understanding of the fundamental properties of both materials. Adhesive mortar formulations were developed with NLA replacement percentages for IOT of 0% (reference), 20%, 40%, 60% and 100%, following the specific Brazilian standards for adhesive mortars. The experimental results confirmed the technical feasibility of fully replacing natural aggregate with IOT, both in ACII and ACIII mortars, characterized by their high added value. This initiative reinforces sustainability in the mining and construction sectors, by promoting the reuse of waste and reducing the environmental impact associated with the inadequate disposal of these materials, contributing to the circular economy.
