Abstract: The oral cavity remains a neglected area for many clinicians, despite patients frequently presenting with primary oral diseases or oral manifestations of systemic diseases. Dermatology training lacks sufficient emphasis on oral diseases, even at the basic examination level. Recognition of the importance of the oral exam and biopsy is crucial to closing this practice gap. Dermatologists should improve recognition and management of oral diseases and adapt their clinical and procedural skills to identify and, when appropriate, biopsy lesions in the oral cavity. Following a comprehensive review of the literature and with the addition of expert practical pearls, this primer aims to equip providers at all levels with essential anatomical knowledge, preoperative assessment, techniques, practical tips, and postprocedural care to perform oral biopsies with confidence.
