Building climate-resilient infrastructure for Hajj pilgrims: A path to safer and sustainable pilgrimage

Year: 2025
Type: editorial
Abstract: With the increase in global temperatures, large events like the Hajj pilgrimage encounter increased environmental hazards, particularly in areas experiencing intense summer heat. For millions of Muslims globally, Hajj is a spiritual pilgrimage and a physical trial under arduous circumstances. Establishing climate-resilient infrastructure is essential to protect pilgrims, especially the elderly and persons with pre-existing health disorders susceptible to heat-related ailments. This editorial examines Saudi Arabia's initiatives to enhance Hajj infrastructure through climate-responsive tents, advanced cooling technologies for communal areas, and extensive pre-Hajj health education. The incorporation of these features improves the safety and comfort of pilgrims, aligning with Saudi Arabia's overarching objectives for sustainable event management and establishing a global benchmark in climate adaptation for large gatherings.
