OP-12 Addressing depression in care home residents: a collaborative approach to working with care home activity coordinators to improve identification and management

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: Introduction Depression among residents in care homes (especially those with dementia) is estimated to be between 40–78% yet is an overlooked issue that significantly impacts quality of life for both residents and their families. Aims To develop a process that supports the identification of depression, including residents with dementia, that acknowledges the impact on residents’ mental health, while establishing a clear pathway to provide a structured approach to the management of depression. Methods A suite of bespoke, user-friendly resources tailored for care homes were developed, incorporating two validated assessment tools for depression in residents, including those with dementia. The initiative included comprehensive educational sessions with additional targeted support, designed to raise awareness of the prevalence of depression and provide Activity Coordinators and colleagues with resources to identify and manage the symptoms of depression. Evaluation included pre and post audits of the numbers of residents with a diagnosis of depression, a full evaluation of the educational sessions, and obtaining feedback through case studies and individual follow ups. Results The project facilitated stronger collaboration between care homes and local GP practices, emphasizing the importance of integrated care. Partnerships were reinforced, particularly with Social Prescribing Link Workers, which enriched the support network available to staff supporting residents. Staff demonstrated a notable increase of 90–95% improvement in knowledge, skills, and confidence. Feedback from attendees confirmed the importance of equipping staff with the necessary tools to identify and manage depression effectively. As a direct outcome, an increase in the percentage of residents diagnosed with depression was evidenced, indicating improved assessment and management practices within care homes. Conclusion This project underscores the critical need for tailored resources and education in addressing mental health challenges in care settings. Impact By empowering staff and enhancing interprofessional collaboration, the quality of care for residents experiencing depression can be improved.
