Abstract: The author of the article and co‑author of the programme used during the Polish language course draws on her experience of working with a group of ten children from Ukraine. The course was based on the latest research on the process of teaching and learning to read in order to equip the participants with language skills that would enable them to participate in classes in Polish schools. In the difficult learning situation in which the children from Ukraine found themselves, the independent construction of grammatically correct statements could only be realised through step‑by‑step learning of the written code.
