Abstract: characterise the contemporary intellectual and historical context of Christian theology. What takes its place are the eleven concatenated essays on highly varied, co-existing contemporary 'movements'.Taken together, these 'movements' might be understood to represent (though not exhaustively, by any means) the wide range of interests and activities in Christian theology as practiced in the English-speaking world today. They certainly showcase the increasing diversity of perspectives, practices and pre-occupations which have come to mark the field.Just how few of these defining 'movements' are tightly confessionally indexed -even ressourcement Thomism has notable Protestant advocates todaymight also intimate the waning importance of strong denominational traditions in giving shape to contemporary work in Christian doctrine. In all this, the New Cambridge Companion honestly reflects the accelerating pluralization of the discipline of theology, perhaps even its fragmentation.Readers may well reflect on the gains and losses involved here; they may also wish to imagine which other notable emerging 'movements' and programmes in theology might find their way into the next iteration of this valuable Companion.
