Abstract: The article deals with topical issues of the history of sociological thought, namely Marxism. The authors characterized and revealed the features of the development of the ideological trend of Marxism, showed its historical significance and role in the development of modern society. The theoretical and practical experience of sociologists and philosophers of that time was analyzed and summarized. It is concluded that research on the topic of Marxism in the historical aspect allows us to understand the historical roots and development of this trend in Russian and world history. Marxism played a significant role in the formation of political and social movements, as well as in the development of ideas and political programs in the XIX-XX centuries
