A DEMATEL-based method for developing and assessing key performance indicators for construction projects

Type: conference-paper
Abstract: . Construction projects present unique challenges compared to other project types, given their inherent risks, lengthy timelines, substantial budgets, and significant social, environmental, and safety implications. Despite these complexities, the ultimate deliverables may not always meet the expectations of end users or owners. This project aims to address this issue by initially developing key performance indicators (KPIs) and subsequently creating a project performance card (PPC) tailored specifically for construction projects. Eight indicators have been identified to assess the performance of these projects upon completion. These indicators will be integrated to derive a final score and issue a project performance card using the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method. The results consist of a Relationships Digraph, which identifies the causal and recipient indicators, and a PPC illustrating the KPIs along with the project's final performance score. To elucidate the developed models and interpret the results for future construction projects, a case study is provided. Project Performance Analyzer (PPA), an automated online tool, has been developed to implement the current methodology and generate a project report card that illustrates the relationships among project indicators. This research significantly contributes to pinpointing the weaknesses in construction project performance and comparing their performance levels to other project types.
