Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In 2020 alone, Guanajuato reported the highest number of homicides in Mexico, with 3 359 killings, most of them linked to conflicts between cartels (Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System of Mexico, 2020). In 2023, Guanajuato remained the Mexican state with the highest number of homicides, accounting for a total of 3 746 deaths (INEGI, 2024). The National Index of Violence Risk Associated with Organized Crime and Its Impact on Children and Adolescents, prepared in 2019 by the National Human Rights Commission, also identified Guanajuato as the third state with the highest risk of violence associated with organized crime affecting children and adolescents. Guanajuato was also the state with the highest level of risk among minors regarding factors associated with children’s and adolescents’ community and home environments, which partially refers to the prevalence of gang affiliation.
