Abstract: A conceptual picture for cumulus cloud populations based on cloud-updraft interaction is discussed• The local shallow preconditioning and the cold pool feedback imply a predatorprey type of interaction in the cloud-precipitation system• A simple predator-prey model shows good agreement with idealized numerical simulations for the rapid shallow-to-deep transition.
