Evaluation of Water Resources Management: a Case Study Conducted at a Higher Education Institution in the Amazon Region
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The global water scarcity crisis has called for the rational use of this resource, in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 of the 2030 Agenda. This study aimed to evaluate water resource management at a higher education institution in the Brazilian Amazon region, using the System for the Assessment of Environmental Education for Water Resource Management (SAPEA-Water). The theoretical framework includes discussions on public water and sanitation policies in Brazil, water management and security, and conceptions of environmental education. A documentary, descriptive, and qualitative research was carried out at the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR). SAPEA-Water evaluates environmental education programs related to the integrated management of water resources, assigning scores to indicators, with a maximum of 48 points. The analysis revealed that although the UFRR performed well on some indicators, it did not fully achieve its goals, obtaining a moderate rating with 19 points. The results offer an insight into how the institution manages its water resources and its environmental education actions, pointing to the need for greater commitment to ensuring sustainable water and sanitation management for all.
