Abstract: In the 1990s, the Olympic Movement started showing interest in environmental development and conservation. The International Olympic Committee, the Switzerland-based group that oversees the Olympic Games, increasingly folded environmental ideas into its public messaging. And yet, scholars have found a significant gap between the IOC’s rhetoric and the reality on the ground in Olympic host cities. This has galvanized credible charges of greenwashing. Organizers of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics vowed that their Games would be different. This article analyzes how the Paris 2024 Olympics fared on ecological matters, and finds that although these Games adopted some significant environmental policies and practices, they fell far short of staging a sustainable event.
