Serum Resistin Level as A Biomarker in The Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis Patients
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a widespread global health issue that impacts approximately one-quarter of the global population. It is linked to multiple metabolic risk factors involving type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension & dyslipidemia, and is described as the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. NAFLD is an independent risk factor of atherosclerotic ischemic heart disease and chronic renal impairment. The diagnostic tools and therapeutic modalities of NAFLD and its more severe form of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are still limited and require more research. Currently, Hepatic ultrasonography, which has operator-dependent results, is the most common-screening modality for patients with NAFLD. Resistin is a pro-inflammatory adipokine produced by adipose tissues & inflammatory cells for example hepatic stellate cells, monocytes as well as macrophages. It is involved in NAFLD inflammatory progression & NAFLD-induced fibrogenesis pathogenesis. Multiple studies suggest that resistin could represent a good diagnostic & prognostic biomarker of NAFLD & NASH. Conclusion: The proinflammatory cytokines of the adipose tissues such as resistin appear to play a pivotal role in the NAFLD-induced fibrogenesis progression and pathogenesis.
