Abstract: Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease that, if not treated properly, can lead to serious and disabling complications, affecting several organs of the body. Brazil has approximately 16.8 million people with diabetes, which is a public health issue due to the aging population and the increasing prevalence of other chronic diseases. A diabetes diagnosis can have a significant emotional impact, characterized by feelings of hopelessness, fear, helplessness, and low self-esteem. The need to make lifestyle changes imposed by treatment can generate stress and make acceptance difficult. The presence of depressive symptoms, lack of motivation, and sociocultural aspects influence the promotion of self-care, making treatment difficult. Thus, through this bibliographic study, we proposed to use Transactional Analysis - TA as a theoretical framework to treat diabetic patients. TA helps patients understand their interpersonal dynamics and psychological vulnerabilities to transcend past experiences and take responsibility for themselves and their health, adopting new lifestyle habits. Active patient participation is essential, including understanding the disease and its treatment, seeking support, managing emotions, changing beliefs and adopting healthy habits. Thus, AT provides people with diabetes with greater self-knowledge, helping them to reframe their disease, take care of their emotional needs and develop strategies to deal with daily challenges. By taking greater responsibility for their choices and actions, individuals can build a healthier lifestyle, promoting a better quality of life.
