How Classical Hematology Aims to Meet the Growing Healthcare Needs of an Aging American Population
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Americans are both aging and living longer, presenting unique challenges to the field of classical hematology regarding patients served and the workforce treating them. Today, a critical shortage of classical hematologists in the United States is compounded by limited training opportunities for new providers. In response to the growing crisis, a classical hematology education program was developed as the first and only of its kind in the U.S., aiming to close the educational gap with a focus on rare bleeding disorders. The program helps replenish the supply of skilled hematologists and deepens providers’ understanding of classical hematology to help improve care outcomes. This article examines the need for the program, its structure, and offers a model for how other healthcare teams might confront similar shortages in their fields.
