The Relationship Between Language Use and Gender Roles in Thomas Hardy's Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Critical Analysis

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: This article examines the relationship between language use and gender roles in Thomas Hardy's novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles". Using a critical discourse analysis approach, this study analyzes the language use of the novel's characters, particularly Tess and Angel, to explore how language reinforces and challenges traditional gender norms. The findings suggest that the novel's language use perpetuates patriarchal attitudes towards women, but also provides opportunities for resistance and challenge. The implications of this study highlight the need for a critical examination of language use in literary texts to better understand the complex relationships between language, gender, and power.
